WHO Issues Warning Over Acute Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Fewer than one in 10 patients that would benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its initial advice on the medications.

Considering more than one billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with holistic and lifelong support," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are significant hurdles to broad access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, says the body.

Skinny Jab Scarcity

Despite the current best projected scenario, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach approximately 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The guideline calls on nations and manufacturers to expand availability, through approaches including patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Work

GLP-1 drugs replicate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, reduce hunger and boost feelings of fullness so individuals reduce food intake.

Patients commonly see weight reduction within a few weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Evidence suggests patients may see weight return within a year of halting the medication, because their normal food cravings resume.

To be above a healthy weight increases your risk for experiencing diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and specific malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was associated with 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
